A 30-Day Journey Exploring a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle
After three days of discussions about cultivating happiness, sharing some tools and skills, including how to remain happy when surrounded by difficult people, don’t you think we are ready to have fun?
A Perfect Gathering of Friends.
We all belong to a water aerobics group. Three times a week we enjoy the water exercise program and in addition splash, chat and laugh in the pool. Our remarkable instructor understands that the social aspect of the exercise hour is vital to feeling well and uplifted as our bones and muscles are being invigorated.
We are a group of women who have walked a considerable stretch of a life journey (60+ to 90+ years) and are retired, yet quite active in our respective lives. I joined the group two years ago as I had relocated from VA to Cleveland OH. I was so struck how warmly I was immediately received by the group of whom most knew each other for many years.
It is a completely informal group with one purpose: exercising the aging ‘worn’ bones and muscles to keep them functioning as long as possible. And I recognized one unspoken core value: embrace everyone who joins the class with an open heart and be very supportive.
About every two months Judy, a born organizer, arranges a fun activity, e.g., visiting some interesting site, a bocce game, and the like but of course, always with FOOD – eating at interesting restaurants. You get the idea.
Well, this time Judy had arranged a spring party with a contest. We all had to select or create and wear a special, fun hat in the spirit of spring. The pictures speak for themselves. The laughter, chatter and fun it created! You would never know that Margret was recovering from a hip surgery; that Mary had to walk with a walker after a leg fracture; Ute’s left arm was in a cast due to a fracture from a recent fall; and so everyone had to deal with some type of less happy events in life. Yet, you would not realize it from the fun, teasing and laughter.
And, the highlight: Gretchen created the fun trophies for the three winners. A true creation from the heart and not the store.
I am sharing this as a perfect example of the discussion in the article Day 13 Skills to Cultivate Happiness – Training Your Mind in which I mentioned one of the skills:
A good support group – When life gets in the way of happiness – and things do happen – a good support group is essential to keeping your happiness in check. Your clan will tell you the truth, be sympathetic, and listen to you over and over and over again.
This ‘splash and chat’ water group is a perfect example of a good support group to keep the happiness quotient alive.
Nurture a good support group or ‘clan!’ They are your backbone to sustain happiness!
Happiness is not as this elusive thing out there, but something absolutely within the realm of our control.
We can create it, manage it and manifest it.
